AI-driven traffic loss is the drop in visits a website gets when a search engine answers the query itself with an AI summary instead of a link. On October 29, 2026, Reddit put a number on it: CEO Steve Huffman told investors the platform lost more than one million search referrals a week, on average, during October, and blamed Google’s AI Overviews and AI Mode (Reuters, October 29, 2026).

Being cited is not being visited

Reddit is an unusual victim. It sells its content to AI companies and is one of the most cited sources in AI answers. Its warning shows how the click economy breaks, and Italy shows how regulators are starting to respond.

What did Reddit say about Google’s AI search?

Reddit’s business is growing; its search audience is not. According to its SEC filing of October 29, 2026, third-quarter revenue rose 53% while US daily users fell 2%, the first decline since its 2024 listing, Reuters reported.

Huffman told analysts that Google is crawling Reddit as hard as ever, while AI Mode sends traffic to no one, according to Reuters. Shares fell 18% in after-hours trading. Reddit’s response is a login wall: most content will require an account, starting with tests in some markets outside the US in the fourth quarter. Logged-in users account for more than 80% of monetization, Huffman said.

Why is a top AI source losing visits?

Because a citation is not a click. In a July 2025 study, Pew Research Center found that Wikipedia, Reddit and YouTube together made up about 15% of the sources linked in Google’s AI summaries. In the same study, only 1% of visits to pages with a summary led to a click on one of those links.

Reddit’s recent growth came from logged-out visitors arriving from search. In Q1 2026 logged-out users grew 26% year over year against 7% for logged-in users; in Q2 the split was 27% against 7%. That is the audience an AI answer intercepts first.

Reddit licenses its data to Google and OpenAI and is suing other AI firms, including Anthropic and Perplexity, over scraping (Reuters). The login wall protects both the data and the users it can monetize.

How do AI answers take clicks away from websites?

The old bargain was simple: a crawler reads the page, the search engine shows a link, the user clicks, the site earns from ads. AI Overviews reads the same pages and writes an answer above the links. Longer, question-style searches trigger it most often: Pew found that only 8% of one- or two-word searches produced an AI summary.

The imbalance starts upstream. Cloudflare reported in August 2025 that 80% of AI crawling is for model training. In July 2025, Anthropic’s crawler fetched about 38,000 pages for every visit it referred. Publishers also cannot leave AI Overviews without risking their Google visibility, one of the issues in the European Commission’s antitrust probe opened on December 9, 2025.

What does the independent data show?

No study isolates the AI effect cleanly, and Search Console counts clicks from AI Overviews and AI Mode as ordinary organic clicks. The direction, though, is consistent.

Google disagrees. On August 6, 2025, head of Search Liz Reid wrote that total organic clicks to websites were relatively stable year over year and that “quality clicks” were rising. Google published no figures to support either claim.

Why is Italy a test case for regulating AI Overviews?

Italy’s regulator has taken AI Overviews into the EU’s platform rules. On April 29, 2026, AGCOM, Italy’s digital services coordinator, asked the European Commission to assess AI Overviews and AI Mode under Articles 27, 34 and 35 of the Digital Services Act, which cover recommender transparency and systemic risks to media pluralism. The request followed a complaint by FIEG, the Italian newspaper publishers’ federation, filed on October 15, 2025. AGCOM also set up a standing table between Google and publishers on copyright, AI and pluralism.

The Italian numbers point the same way as the US ones. ItaliaOggi’s analysis of Audiweb data found that the number of Italians online stayed flat at 44.4 million a month, while the top 10 news sites lost 22% of daily users between January 2025 and May 2026. ItaliaOggi notes that it has no data on traffic sources, so the AI link is likely but unproven.

The best-known Italian how-to site makes the same point. Salvatore Aranzulla, founder of Aranzulla.it, told Fanpage in October 2025 that his traffic had fallen 25%. The figure is self-reported, with no time frame, but it fits the pattern: step-by-step guides are the content an AI summary replaces most easily.

As of November 2, 2026, neither the EU antitrust probe nor the DSA assessment has produced a public decision.

What changes for publishers?

  1. Stable impressions with falling clicks are the signal. In SEOcrawl’s sample, impressions rose 0.4% while clicks fell 15%. Note that Google dropped the num=100 parameter in September 2025, which lowered reported impressions for technical reasons.
  2. Generic guides are most exposed. Definitions, how-tos and comparisons without original data are what summaries replace.
  3. Owned audiences matter more than passing traffic. Reddit’s 80% figure for logged-in monetization makes the case.
  4. Being cited by AI does not bring the click back. Per Pew, links inside summaries were clicked in 1% of visits.
  5. Regulation will be slow. Any compensation or real opt-out depends on EU proceedings still open.

FAQ

Do Google’s AI Overviews reduce website traffic?

Independent studies measure fewer clicks when an AI summary appears: 8% versus 15% in Pew’s data. Google says total clicks are relatively stable but has not published figures.

Is Reddit in financial trouble?

No. Revenue grew 53% in Q3 2026. What is falling is traffic from Google: US daily users fell 2%, and Reddit warned of a possible double-digit decline in Q4.

Can a website opt out of AI Overviews without losing Google visibility?

According to the European Commission, not today. It is one of the issues in the antitrust probe opened on December 9, 2025.

What did Italy’s AGCOM do about AI Overviews?

On April 29, 2026, it asked the European Commission to assess AI Overviews and AI Mode under the Digital Services Act and opened a standing table with Google and publishers.
