In 2026 the first two areas are changing fastest, driven by regulation, with the European Union having completed its biometric border infrastructure and now preparing for the next step, the ETIAS travel authorisation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Biometric borders: how EES works<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>EES (the Entry\/Exit System) is the European system that digitally records every entry and exit of non-EU citizens on short stays, replacing the passport stamp with biometric data (facial photo and fingerprints) collected at the first border crossing. After a phased rollout that began on 12 October 2025, the system became fully operational across all 29 participating countries on 10 April 2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The process for a non-EU traveller works like this: at first entry, a facial photo and fingerprints are collected along with passport data; on subsequent checks, verifying the already-registered face or fingerprints is enough, often via self-service kiosks (which remain optional and not always available). Data is retained for a maximum of three years. In the first months of full operation, more than 51.5 million entries and exits were tracked and over 27,000 entry refusals recorded, including several hundred cases flagged as security risks. Airport and airline associations have asked for flexibility in enforcement during summer peaks, reporting longer queues especially during the initial fingerprint-collection stage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">ETIAS: what it is and when it becomes mandatory<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>ETIAS (the European Travel Information and Authorisation System) is an electronic travel authorisation, not a visa, required before departure for citizens of over 60 non-EU countries currently visa-exempt, including the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia and Japan, for short stays (up to 90 days within a 180-day period) across 30 European countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The status verified as of August 2026: operational launch is expected in the last quarter of 2026, followed by a transition period and a grace period of at least six months each, during which the authorisation will be encouraged but not yet mandatory for entry: full enforcement is therefore realistically expected in 2027. The current official cost is \u20ac7, but the European Commission has proposed raising it to \u20ac20 to align it with similar systems such as the US ESTA; final approval by the Council and European Parliament is still pending. Travellers under 18 and over 70 are exempt from payment. The process will be entirely online, with a response in most cases within minutes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The flip side for people travelling from Italy: since 2 April 2025, Italian citizens too must apply for their own electronic authorisation, the UK ETA, to enter the United Kingdom even just in airport transit; since 8 April 2026 the cost of the UK ETA has risen to \u00a320 (roughly \u20ac23), valid for two years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">AI as a travel agent<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Conversational AI assistants are increasingly used to plan itineraries, compare flights and suggest accommodation in natural language, and some platforms are experimenting with agents capable of completing a booking autonomously. The real limitation, documented by several practical tests, remains the reliability of operational details: flight times, real-time prices and actual availability are areas where language models can still produce plausible but wrong answers (so-called hallucinations), which is why a final check on an official channel remains essential before purchasing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Dynamic pricing: why prices keep changing<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Dynamic pricing algorithms for flights and hotels recalculate fares based on demand, remaining availability, a user&#8217;s search behaviour and how close the search is to the departure date. Three practical, evidence-based tips can help save money: clearing cookies or using private browsing for repeated searches (to avoid a possible tracking effect on displayed prices), booking well ahead on low-availability routes, and comparing fares at different times of day, since some systems update prices multiple times a day based on observed demand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Automated hotels and hospitality robots<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Reception-free check-in via kiosk or app is now widespread across many international chains. More distinctive are the service robots already operating in Japan and China, used for room deliveries, cleaning and even front-desk greeting in showcase hotels partly designed for the novelty effect. In Europe adoption remains more selective, concentrated in high-end properties or in contexts facing staff shortages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Smart luggage and IoT tracking<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The spread of cheap Bluetooth trackers (the so-called &#8220;AirTag economy&#8221;) has made it common for travellers to track their own suitcase independently, often spotting a delay before the airline even reports it. Lost luggage remains a structural problem for global air travel, and it is precisely the intersection of personal tracking and airport sorting systems where the next generation of solutions is being built.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Overtourism: technology to manage it<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The most cited case in Europe is Venice, which introduced an access fee for day-trippers on the busiest dates, managed through digital booking and QR-code checks. Other tourist cities are trialling pedestrian flow sensors to measure crowding in real time in narrow streets, squares and museums, and to trigger, if necessary, temporary access restrictions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Italy: airports and digital tourism<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Italian airports adopted EES alongside the rest of the Schengen area, with the same early-stage slowdowns reported at European level. On the investment side, Italy&#8217;s PNRR recovery plan has allocated funds to digitalising tourism, from digital destination marketing to technology grants for small accommodation operators, with implementation still uneven across regions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">FAQ<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Do Italians need ETIAS to travel in Europe?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>No: ETIAS applies to non-EU citizens currently visa-exempt (such as those from the US, Canada, the UK, Australia) entering the Schengen area, not to Italian or other EU citizens, who remain free to travel as they do today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Will the passport disappear because of EES?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>No: a passport is still required, EES simply replaces the manual stamp with a digital record of entries and exits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>How much will ETIAS cost?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The currently confirmed cost is \u20ac7, but an increase to \u20ac20 is under discussion; final approval had not yet been given at the time of this update.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Do Italians need a visa for the UK?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>No, but since 2 April 2025 they need an electronic authorisation (UK ETA), mandatory even for simple airport transit, whose cost rose to \u00a320 from 8 April 2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Can an AI book a trip without mistakes?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Not yet reliably: practical tests show AI assistants can get times or prices wrong, so a final check is still advisable before confirming a purchase.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Travel in 2035<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If biometric borders keep expanding and AI genuinely becomes reliable as a booking agent, travel in the next decade could remove almost every documentary friction point: identity verified by face, digital authorisations already on file, itineraries built by an assistant and corrected in real time.
